World Aquaculture Society Africa Chapter-West African Region Partners with Rivers State Farmers / fisheries society of Nigeria to Drive Sustainable Aquaculture Growth in Nigeria
Port Harcourt, Nigeria, 21st Nov. 2025, The World Aquaculture Society (WAS) has announced a landmark collaboration with the Rivers State Fisheries Society of Nigeria (RIVFISON) and the Rivers State Catfish and Allied Fish Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIV-CAFFAN) to strengthen aquaculture innovation, capacity building, and sustainable fish production across Rivers State and the wider Niger Delta region.
This partnership reflects the visionary leadership of the World Aquaculture Society, which is focused on bridging science, policy, and practice for inclusive and sustainable aquaculture growth. The collaboration underscores WAS’s commitment to empowering farmers, advancing technology adoption, and building resilient aquaculture communities in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water).
As part of this collaboration, a one-day workshop will be hosted in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, bringing together farmers, researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers. The event will focus on modern fish farming techniques, new aquaculture policies, and innovation pathways to enhance productivity, profitability, and sustainability for local farmers.
According to a WAS West Africa Regional Director,
“This partnership symbolizes a shared vision to empower farmers, strengthen collaboration, and ensure that the benefits of global aquaculture science reach grassroots communities. Together, we are building a future where aquaculture becomes a major driver of food security, youth employment, and economic resilience in Africa.”
The initiative positions Rivers State as a strategic hub for aquaculture innovation, with the support of WAS and its global network fostering knowledge exchange, training opportunities, and sustainable production models. Through this partnership, farmers are encouraged to adopt environmentally responsible practices and leverage new technologies to boost productivity and market competitiveness.
This collaboration marks a significant step toward achieving sustainable blue economy goals, transforming local challenges into opportunities for growth and global relevance.
